Lighting Setup

The 3-Point Lighting Rule

1
Key Light (Ring Light): Position directly in front of your face, at eye level. This is your main light source.
2
Fill Light: A secondary lamp on the opposite side to reduce shadows. Can be softer than your key light.
3
Back Light (Optional): LED strip or lamp behind you to create depth and separate you from the background.
Warm vs Cool Light
Warm light (3000K) is softer and more flattering for skin. Avoid harsh daylight bulbs.
Natural Light
Great during the day but inconsistent. Always have your ring light as backup.
Avoid Overhead
Ceiling lights create unflattering shadows under your eyes and chin. Turn them off.
Test Before Streaming
Always check your lighting setup in a preview before going live.

Camera Angles

The Most Flattering Setup

Your camera angle can make or break your stream. Here's what works:

  • 1.
Eye Level or Slightly Above: Position your webcam at eye level or a few inches higher. This is universally flattering.
  • 2.
Arms Length Distance: You should fill most of the frame but have some breathing room. Not too close, not too far.
  • 3.
Look at the Camera: Make eye contact with the lens, not the screen. Put a small sticker next to your webcam as a reminder.
  • 4.
Slight Tilt: Tilting your head slightly looks more natural and approachable than facing straight-on.

Room Setup

DO
  • โœ“ Make your bed with clean, aesthetic bedding
  • โœ“ Add fairy lights or LED strips for ambiance
  • โœ“ Keep plants or minimal decor visible
  • โœ“ Use a neutral or soft-colored backdrop
  • โœ“ Hide cables and clutter
  • โœ“ Lock your door
DON'T
  • โœ• Show dirty laundry or mess
  • โœ• Have identifiable items (mail, ID, photos)
  • โœ• Stream near windows without curtains
  • โœ• Have loud AC/fan directly near mic
  • โœ• Use cluttered or busy backgrounds
  • โœ• Forget to silence your phone

Audio Quality

Sound Matters More Than You Think

Viewers will tolerate mediocre video but terrible audio is an instant turn-off.

โœ“
Use AirPods or a Lapel Mic: Built-in laptop mics pick up room echo. External mics sound much better.
โœ“
Eliminate Echo: Soft furnishings (rugs, curtains, pillows) absorb sound and reduce echo.
โœ“
Background Music: Play soft lo-fi or ambient music at low volume. It fills silence and sets the mood.
โœ“
Test Everything: Do a test recording before every stream to check audio levels.
